What is Cosmetic Tattooing?

Micropigmentation is a safe, semi-permanent cosmetic makeup for eyebrows, eye-lining, lip-lining and full lip creation. Using tattoo methods to insert natural pigments into the dermal layer of the skin. Micropigmentation is fast becoming a very popular treatment within the cosmetic industry because it allows busy people to look great 24 hours a day.

Why would I have it done?

If you have no eyebrows, or partial eyebrows, a cosmetic tattoo can help. A lip tattoo can reduce "lipstick bleed," and give definition to the lip line. Eyeliner will enhance the shape of the eyes and give the appearance of more eyelashes.

  • Add beautiful shape and lift to your brows.
  • Define sparse or over-plucked brows – no more brow pencil
  • Create a natural look which frames the face and adds a youthful look
  • Restore the appearance of softer looking brows with hair stroke techniques
  • Contact lenses wearer’s, physically (e.g. Arthritis) or visually impaired and alopecia sufferers love permanent makeup. Pigment can be implanted to give the appearance of brow shape and eyelashes.
  • Cosmetic enhancement is popular with all ages.

How long does it last?

The pigment can then be expected to last anywhere from one to three years depending on procedure, pigment colour used and the individual. Gradual fading will occur during this period. As ageing is a continual process, which means natural lightening of the skin and hair, the fading of the pigment gives the opportunity to change pigment colour with each re-touch.

Is it painful?

To keep discomfort to a minimum, anaesthetic creams are used before and during the procedure. The discomfort of the procedure varies from one person to another. Some discomfort is to be expected.

What can I expect to feel afterwards?

There will be temporary swelling and redness in the area. The colour will appear dark and exact for 7-10 days. A slight crusting formation or flaking can also occur during this time. We recommend if you are having an eyeliner treatment to bring sunglasses with you.

You will receive a full aftercare sheet after your treatment.

We provide free Micropigmentation consultations. This is when we establish if the treatment is right for you and answer any questions you may have.

Some medications, supplements and procedures may impact your ability to have cosmetic tattooing.

Please read the list below and let us know if any of these relate to you.

NOTE: Some things on the list we need to be aware of but may not impact your ability to have cosmetic tattooing

Pregnancy or Breastfeeding – Must be able to pump and dump 2 feeds immediately after procedure to get rid of anything in your system

Tattooing while pregnant is not accepted.

Contagious skin disorders – cannot treat until clear

Diabetic – depending on type and severity, may need a doctor’s approval

Recent chemical peel or laser treatment/any facials – 2-4 weeks before treatment and after treatment, avoid brow area aftertreatment

Bruise easily or have very sensitive skin

Used Retin A or Glycolic acids –Must be at least 4 weeks of not using before treatment and don’t use over the tattoo after

Any problems healing small wounds

Oily skin fades quicker, due to the skin producing so much oil, it pushes out the pigment quicker. This skin type is not suited to microblading

Heart conditions – we need a doctor’s consent, due to the anaesthetic we use (Epinephrine)

Autoimmune disorders - Contact us to discuss which medication you are using.

Fillers and Botox – Cannot tattoo 2 weeks before and after treatment

Keloid scarring – We cannot treat you.

Seizure related conditions – You must have your doctors’ consent for treatment and use of anaesthetics.

You must have an accompanying adult if under the age of 18

Excessive bleeder – This may cause your tattoo to fade

Depression – make sure you are in the correct mindset as this can be a nerve-wracking process

Been tattooed before and had problems healing and fading - we need to know prior to appointment

Chemotherapy/radiation – You cannot be treated without doctor’s consent

Roaccutane use – Cannot be tattooed until you are 6 months-1 year off the medication

Wear contact lenses - Bring a container to remove them if tattooing eyeliner

Previous hyperpigmentation in wound areas

For eyeliner tattoo, all false lashes and extensions must be removed including glue.

Prescription drugs of any sort – we need to know any medication you are on that may cause photosensitizing including Antibiotics and anti-Inflammatory medications

Dermatitis/eczema/psoriasis – we cannot treat if around eyebrow area.

Fake tan/use of sunbeds – Do not use 2 weeks prior or after.

Any cancer history –we need a doctors’ certificate

Glaucoma

Hepatitis – (Liver) anaesthetic is processed through the liver and can result in pain

Please also note you must avoid sweating for 5 days post treatment - Eyebrow tattooing only

Wash your hair the night before or morning of your appointment, as you will not be able to wet your cosmetic tattoo for 5 days following your treatment.

If you are concerned about pain for eyebrow procedures you may buy Emla cream from the chemist to use. One hour before your tattooing appointment, apply half of the tube to your brows and then cover it with glad wrap.  Arrive at your appointment with the glad wrap on, we will remove this. Most people fold the glad wrap into a long strip and clip it to either side of your hairline to keep it off your eyes. If the numbing cream is not applied correctly it won’t work.

NOTE - This is only required for eyebrow tattooing; all other tattooing will be pre-numbed by your therapist.

Wear dark coloured clothing to your appointment.

It is not necessary to have your brows tinted or shaped before your appointment. It is recommended to wait at least two weeks to have them tinted after the procedure if you wish to keep tinting them.

Together we will discuss what technique you are wanting and what will suit your face shape and skin type.

We will map your brows using certain points on your face. This gives you an eyebrow shape perfect for your facial features.

Your procedure itself will last 1.25 hours although the allocated time for your appointment will be at least 2 hours. PLEASE NOTE – We do not allow friends or family in the room during your treatment as this may cause distractions.

Your permanent cosmetic procedure will be performed with anaesthetic. Topical anaesthetic will be applied during your treatment by your therapist to help make it pain-free.

Your cosmetic tattoo WILL appear bolder immediately after the procedure. This is common in all permanent cosmetic applications. In eyebrows, hair strokes appear crisp and bold at first, but will soften as the skin heals. Colour will remain the same intensity and darkness as they were when first created, because approximately 40-70% of the colour will fade from the epidermal layer of the skin during the healing process.

Clients with darker skin, please know that due to your skin colour that is naturally darker pigmented, the Hair Stroke Eyebrows will NOT appear as defined or as dark as on lighter skin types.

Before you go home make sure to review your written post treatment instructions. Please ask any questions that you may have.

Implanted pigment will gradually fade. The length of time it takes to fade depends on my skin type, (oily), age metabolism, medications, smoking, alcohol, sun exposure, Retin A, Glycolic Acids and any problems experienced with the implantation and absorbency of the pigment into my skin.

If you do not have the second treatment, you cannot expect the colour to last. The second visit is to check that the pigment healed evenly in the skin and that no more pigment needs to be added to the shape. THE FOLLOW-UP APPOINTMENT IS A VERY IMPORTANT STEP IN THE WHOLE COSMETIC TATTOO PROCEDURE.

You will be given aftercare to use at home following your procedure.

Your touch up procedure will be scheduled at your initial procedure appointment if not done so prior. Occasionally some people do require a third touch-up depending on how your skin retains pigment. If a third touch-up is required this is charged the same as the original touch-up cost.

There could be a sensitivity reaction to either the anaesthetics, pigment or after care products, but this is a very rare occurrence.

After your treatment you may experience some slight redness and/or mild swelling. You are welcome to take mild pain killers after your procedure if needed and antihistamines for swelling.

Most clients return to work the same day, eyebrow cosmetic tattooing is reasonably pain free.

You may feel a mild throbbing as the anaesthetic wears off.

You will not be able to do physical exercise after your treatment for 5 days.

Please inform your doctor of any permanent cosmetic enhancement if you are required to have a MRI scan within a 3-month period of receiving the procedure.

You can not donate blood for a period of six months after having a cosmetic tattoo.
